Our last week's work- Making the change!!
Dear boys,
We have put together some things to help you prepare for starting in post-primary school next year. Many of you may have attended the webinar that we suggested and will be familiar with some of what we will cover.
The main thing is don't sweat about it! There's a bit of a deal being made of you guys going into secondary school and transitioning in the media. I know you will be at a slight disadvantage having missed out on school for the past few weeks BUT way back in November when we had parent-teacher meetings I told lots of your parents that you were already ready for secondary school! It won't matter that you missed out on some chapters in maths or history. Every year thousands of children go from 6th class to 1st year and I haven't heard of one child coming back to primary school! :-)
Throughout this and every change you encounter try and reflect back, if you can, on our Empowering Beliefs. They can be really helpful to you going forward in your life. Some will be easier for you than others and that's okay. YOU WILL BE FINE!
We hope to see you all on Thursday at 7:30 pm for your graduation. We will send you an email with the invitation / code on Wednesday morning.
Best of luck in your last week of 6th class.
Kindest regards & respect,
Ms. McBride

There are four different things we want to cover with you and you could tackle one each day or whatever way you find most helpful for you. They are:
Take a look first at the basics file we're attaching. It's got lots of the practical and helpful points. There's a section at the bottom that looks at some differences too between Maths and English at primary and secondary level. However the first couple of pages are the most important.
- The Basics
- Homework
- Timetables
- Making friends.

The next file is about homework. It has pages taken from a book especially designed to help you with the changes in secondary school called Belonging Plus 2. Look at all the questions, especially those on the last page. Knowing how to take homework down in your journal becomes even more important next year. Taking 5-10 seconds to write down details or work or materials needed in your journal could save you lots of time trying to figure it out or doing the wrong thing. I know in Coláiste na hInse they call their journal their "Cinn Lae" and one student who came back to visit us told me it's the most important book in his bag.

Take a look at the timetable file below and try and answer the questions. If you can work out your timetable it'll make your life so much easier. Maybe sit down and look at it with an older sibling or parent. I'd recommend having a few copies of your timetable in September and put one in the kitchen, another in your bedroom and of course one in your homework journal. This example timetable is taken from webinar slides by Gráinne Mulcahy. We have permission to share it with you.

Making new friends or not being with old friends can be a worry for many of you. This change is a natural part of life. It's a great time to meet new people and make more friends. It may not happen straight away and that is okay. Talk to your parents or siblings about the friends that they made in secondary school. The file below has some great tips on making new friends and what to do if you fall out with them. Some of this you may want to read again next September or October but don't worry I'll keep it on the blog for any of you that want to read it again then. The file is made from webinar slides by Gráinne Mulcahy and we have permission to share it with you.

Water Safety!!!
Dear boys,
At this time of year many of you will be outdoors enjoying the sunshine and perhaps enjoying our beautiful beach and waterways. This is a fantastic thing to do however there are many dangers in it. Already this summer we have heard of children loosing their lives in the water. Over the last ten years 30 children in Ireland have drowned in water. Imagine that's almost our entire class. PLEASE please be safe around water and follow the water safety rules.
Take the time to read through the booklet below. It might save your life. It might save your friend's or a sibling's life. It'll only take 10 minutes, surely it's worth the effort.
When you have read through it why not try some of the interactive games to check your knowledge.

Homework 8th-12th June: ACTIVE WEEK!!!
Hi Boys,
You'll be glad to hear that your homework is a little different this week because it is Active Week.
Therefore, I'm swapping your written work that I had planned for this week to an Active-Home Challenge instead.
The World Health Organisation states that adults and children alike need 60 minutes of exercise each day.
So this week I want you each to try just that! I want you to motivate yourself to keep active at home by trying out NEW activities, taking on CHALLENGES and having FUN with family activities. You could learn a new skill, improve on a skill, take on a challenge, create a new game, participate in family fitness activities or do some online exercises.
To complete this challenge you will have to find four different ways of being active every day, making sure that this adds up to 60 minutes, or more, of physical activity. All members of the family are encouraged, to take on this challenge.
I have included some ideas to help you keep active this week under this post and attached an ideas file above too.
Remember if exercising outdoors, keep within 5 km from home, keeping 2 m distance from others.
I have attached a challenge chart above for you to fill out each day. Please send these to me when fully completed on Friday 12th June at [email protected]. I would love to see what fun you will get up to and find out which activities and challenges you enjoyed the most.
Have a lovely week.
Ms. McBride.

Homework 25/5/20-29/5/20
Dear boys,
Please find below the work for the week. The maths this week gets more challenging so we have kept everything else quiet basic so that you can focus your time on the maths.
We've only a few weeks left boys so please keep trying to do a bit of work everyday. Everything you do now will help you next year, we're at the stage now where you're refining your work, improving the quality and bringing it to the next level.
Ms. Mullen and I plan to spend your last week of school 15th - 18th of June preparing you guys for secondary school. We plan to cover class timetables, organising your bag and locker, homework & study tips and also how to manage your well-being at that time. We know there is an online workshop designed for 6th classes costing €30 but we think we will cover much of that during your last week with us. If you do want a link to the workshop email us!
Any issues or questions please email us at [email protected].
Kind regards,
F. McBride

The following 2 tutorials will help you to complete pg.132 of your Busy at Maths.
We are looking at working out how much profit or loss people can make when they sell items. Important terms such as cost price and selling price are introduced.
Please look at the two tutorials and then complete page 132. Once you understand the terms the maths is straightforward, only requiring you to minus or plus. You can use a calculator.

Today you are building on the work of both last week and the last two days. You will be working out the cost price or selling price when given what the profit or loss was. Losses are marked in brackets. It is REALLY IMPORTANT with these sums that you figure out how much (what fraction) is the number you're working with. Usually we say the cost price is 100% and the selling price is 100% + %profit. Look at the tutorial for help and remember your RAVES strategy.

Hi lads,
This week we're going to finish 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'. We hope you've enjoyed the novel and we're asking you to watch the film (with parental permission) on Thursday and Friday.
We're going to keep focusing on maths this week, once again we have included a number of video tutorials to try and explain it. If you're stuck with any of the questions, look at the video a few times and try again. You can email us if you're still facing difficulty.
This week for Irish we've attached worksheets for the irregular Irish verbs. These verbs are very important. You will use them regularly in your Irish reading and writing so we would STRONGLY encourage you to learn them. It'll take just over 2 weeks to go through them all. Then we will give you a worksheet to test yourself on them. We're attaching a short tutorial explaining them and we've included a gallery showing you a list of phrases that will tell you what tense you must change the verb into.
Don't forget to send in your photos of your first day in junior infants and your landscape video of you catching the ball by Wednesday to [email protected].

Before this we need the help of you and your parents. We need two things
- A photo of you on your first day of school in Junior Infants. It's okay if you started in a different school, we still want your picture.
- We want a short 3-5 second LANDSCAPE video of you catching a ball that has been thrown in from the left of the screen (as the viewer looks at it). You catch the ball, pause for 1-2 seconds, looking at the camera and then throw / kick the ball off to the right of the screen. When we put all the videos together it should look as if each boy is throwing his ball onto the next person. Well that's the idea. Hopefully it will work.
Spread the word to your friends, make sure everyone knows and gets their picture & video in. You've a week so get cracking!

Hi Boys,
Please find below a list of your homework for the coming week.
I want to give you a quick outline of the work we're suggesting for the week ahead. This week we are going to mainly focus on Maths and your project on your locality. We will give you some questions on old maps and images to help think of ideas for your project. Your project may involve you getting out and about and visiting some of the local landmarks and maybe even taking a photo or two to add into your project. Please make sure you only travel within the allowed 5km, I don’t think the guards will accept the excuse “but my teacher said ...”! We would like you to submit your project on Donacarney / Mornington by the evening of MONDAY 18th of May.
Our biggest focus for the next two to three weeks is going to be on Maths. We’re going to try to move onto topics that will build on concepts you have already learned. We're going to try our best to explain this using video tutorials, some Ms. Mullen and I will make and some from CJ Fallon. These chapters may be challenging but we feel it's important that we try and cover them. If you're stuck on anything, go back and watch the tutorials a few times or perhaps email us with your parents and we can try to help. We're going to be looking at fractions, decimals and percentages. I would recommend you using your calculator for the trickier parts throughout the next 2-3 weeks.
Please do not get stressed out if you do not get this. I'm sure your maths teacher next year will go back and cover this. We'll just give it our best shot. We really want you to focus on your Maths and get comfortable with the new concepts. As a result we will not be suggesting any Irish work for the next while. If any of you would like to have suggested Irish work we can email to you no problem.
Above all else at this time mind yourselves and your families. Take time to get out for a walk or a bit of exercise each day. Make sure you touch base with your friends regularly. Learn things that you don't usually learn in school e.g. bake, cook, DIY etc. Be kind to each other. Nobody has ever been through anything like this before and everyone is trying their best. It doesn't mean you or I or your family will always get it right, but try and do things with the right intention and kindness at the heart of it. Try and live our school motto.
Ár ndícheall i gcónaí - Our best always :-)

Update on Graduation and Emails.
Dear boys,
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. We have sent a post very similar to this to all parents on their Aladdin app, here is your version of it!
Please remember the work we're giving you is advisory. It's what we would recommend. Some days/weeks you'll find it easier or harder to concentrate than others and that is okay. Just do your best. Don't ignore one subject all week though if you're finding it too much perhaps do less Maths one day, less Irish another etc.
We have asked that one piece of English and Irish work is emailed to us at some stage this week. This is NOT compulsory but we hope to get lots in. I'm going to assume you're happy for your pictures to be put on the blog here unless you tell me otherwise, if that's okay.
Please note that due to GDPR & digital age of consent we cannot reply to emails sent in from a pupil’s personal email address, therefore we’re asking that only parental email accounts be used.
Lads, we were all really disappointed to hear the news on Friday that we would not be returning to school before the summer holidays. It was not what I was expecting or hoping for. However rest assured preparations and planning have already begun for an online graduation ceremony for the 6th class boys in June. Exact date, time and details to follow, but we will endeavour to mark this milestone in your life as best we can, in the current situation. We will be in contact with you about it. You're a great bunch of lads, remember that.

Our SET teachers have designed and made a fantastic blog designed to help parents of pupils who have specific diagnosis, specific learning difficulties, anxiety and those that find literacy and numeracy difficult. However I've looked at their blog and I think its a fantastic resource for ALL pupils and is well worth checking out. They've lots of games, fun activities and tips & advise on it. Give it a click!

Guess the Mystery Sound:
Thanks to all of those who entered this weeks competition.
I had a great response and many great guesses.
Some of which included:
* an electric whisk,
*a blender,
*a food processor,
*a tractor mower starting up,
*a hoover
and a washing machine spinning.
The Mystery Sound was in fact a flying drone. A couple of boys managed to correctly guess this but the first person to guess it correctly was Daniel. Well done Daniel. There is a prize on the way to you.
Keep your eyes peeled on the blog next Monday for a Brand New Competition.
Have a lovely weekend.

Ms. McBride.
Update!!
Please find below the work for the week ahead. We have less questions for the novel this week, with only one activity per chapter per day. We would like if you could send us in one or two of these activities. You can choose which you'd like us to see. We do not have to put your work on the blog, it is us our way of encouraging you in your work.
On Tuesday & Wednesday this week in Maths we will be looking at 3-D shapes. You are very familiar with this topic as it regularly comes up in our Mental Maths. If you're stuck, the pages of shapes at the back of your Mental Maths might help. On Thursday & Friday we have a Maths Mystery. It involves a bit of problem solving and revises lots of different maths skills that we have learned about. You must open the pdf file that says Maths Mystery Introduction first. It will explain what you need to do. Then there are 10 clues (which can be found in the 2nd maths pdf). When you solve all 10 clues you should have 10 digits. We will put the full 10 digits up in the answers page on Friday.
You have two pieces of Irish writing to do this week. We would really like for you to send us in at least one of the pieces. We are attaching pdfs to help support you in your writing. Keep it simple and accurate.
We have attached a geography chapter from Small World and we are asking you to complete the activities in it. This chapter explores the county of Sligo in detail using maps and images. The geographical language and geographical skills are important to develop.

Theatre Lovett production available to watch online
If you cast your minds back to 2nd class when myself and Ms. Mullen brought all you boys into the Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda to see the play "They called her Vivaldi". I really remember the play because I thought it was just super. I'll be honest I'm always on the lookout to see if they're touring with another play so that we can all go again!
The same theatre group performed a different play called "The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly" in the Sydney Opera House in 2014 and it's now available to watch online. It might be worth a look. It's suitable for children from 6 years upwards, I'm sure the whole family might enjoy it. Here's a link to it:

Hi boys,
As part of your learning and research about World War II you might be interested in watching "World War II in Colour" on Netflix. It has 13 episodes, each about an hour long and covers events from the outbreak of the war until the dropping of the atomic bomb in Japan in 1945. It uses real film footage from the time.
I have watched it myself and found it interesting and informative.
*** You need to check with your parents, to be sure that they are happy for you to watch it as it is marked as needing "Guidance". ***
Some episodes, particularly the one when the concentration camps are discovered can be difficult and upsetting to watch.

Hi boys,
As part of your learning and research about World War II you might be interested in watching "World War II in Colour" on Netflix.
Quick Update before Easter Holidays:
Hi boys,
I hope you're all keeping well. It's been really great to hear from some of you by email already, I'm looking forward to hearing more and to hear how you're getting on with not only your homework but what are you up to as you socially isolate. Don't be shy, send in your photos or just email! I'm sure you're eager to see what everyone else has been up to.
Have you been watching the RTÉ Homeschool Hub? Some parts in it are a bit too easy but I thought that the science lesson where they taught you how to draw circuits using symbols was perfect for you guys to try out. Give it a try, it's on each day on RTÉ 2 at 11:00.
Myself & Ms. Mullen have been in contact and we're hoping to change a few things work-wise for after the Easter Holidays. We're going to try engaging with the novel 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'. We've found a PDF version of the book that you can download onto a kindle / tablet or phone to read. We'll also link to the audiobook on Youtube. We're also hoping to cover World War II, we know you were all eager to learn about it. Let us know if you know of any good resources that we can include for the class.
I won't put up pictures of any written work with a name on it, so make sure when you're taking pictures of any projects that you don't have your name on it. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Ms. McBride
